In the fire assessment report of the Bankstown Bunker just before it opened, there are records of an escape tunnel. Ironically the entrance to this tunnel was blocked by air conditioning units, so the report could not specify where this tunnel led to. I have been told one theory that these are tunnels belonging to the Water Board that have been utilized to link from one site to the next. This makes a lot more sense than digging up kilometers of road and people’s back gardens to create a purpose built tunnel, rendering this ‘secret escape tunnel’ not so ‘secret’.
Allegedly the rail workshops at Chullora were used for munitions, plane parts manufacture, tanks and ordnance. There is meant to be an underground bunker system, which could have been used previously for train construction.
